THE FINLYANDSKY (FINLAND) RAILWAY STATION
The Finlyandsky (Finland) railway station was constructed in 1870 specially for the railroad connecting Petersburg with Finland which at that time was a principality being a part of the Russian Empire.
In the 50s of the previous century the Finland railway station was reconstructed. As a result, it lost its initial appearance almost entirely. The façade of the building was changed completely - it was actually built anew and in another way, and the central part of the old building was walled up in one of the new railway buildings. The Finland railway station was opened in June of 1960 after the reconstruction.
The Finland railway station is perhaps the most well-known railway station of the city-on-the-Neva. It is famous mainly for the fact that on the 3rd of April, 1917, Vladimir Ilyich Lenin came down to its platform having returned from his emigration. In commemoration of this significant event, a monument to the leader was installed on the square in front of the old building of the Finland railway station in 1926. In the 50s of the previous century one more object of note connected with the name of Lenin appeared in the railway station: it is the steam-engine which brought him to St. Petersburg. They erected a glass pavilion on the platform specially for it, and the steam-engine is still in it now. It is interesting that this steam-engine was presented to the Soviet Union by Finland.
The Finland railway station is situated near the subway station Ploschad Lenina, there is a vestibule of this subway station in its left wing. Trains run in the direction of Vyborg, Priozersk and Helsinki from the Finland railway station.
